THE BACK STORY

The reason I am writing this, is to inspire you to look beyond the normal portrait photographer and their trends. Take a look outside this and step into the fashion world of photography. This term fashion gets thrown around a lot. Everyone wants their photos to look like the magazines, but o en, they fall short.

There is a growing digital trend in the senior portrait market to make very grungy and over saturated photos. In my opinion these images will be dated very quickly because they are not concentrating on photo techniques but Photoshop craziness to make an image. There is a lack of emphasis being put on making of the actual photograph.

My philosophy is, realism. Meaning when the image is finished it should still look like a photograph.

Flip through the pages of real fashion magazine like Vogue, Harper’s or W and you will see many wonderful photographs. The thing is, they look real, unmanipulated Photographs!

With the birth of digital photography portrait photographers have fallen short of skills and rely on Photoshop to correct their lack of ability’s with controlling light. The other trend with portrait photographers is they have fallen in love with over saturated, over sharpened backgrounds and faces so retouched that they make the client look like they are a wax statues. My point is, it is ok to do a bit of retouching, but with proper lighting and styling rather than Photoshop action wizardry, you will achieve more normal looking images that should be visually viable long in the future.

On the following pages you will find fashion inspired senior photos that I have shot over the past couple of years. I have picked these images to show you another way to look at senior photography.

When I started shooting senior photos I really was just shooting images that I thought MOM’s would be cool with. However, there was a bunch missing from my images. My Images were missing genuine emotion. It was not until I was shooting for a magazine and I realized the model was just 18. I thought, why couldn’t these be her senior photos? Well they could be and it was a er that shoot I started thinking I was shooting a fashion shoot rather than senior photos.

In the studio I have an assistance of professional makeup and hair. Plus styling. You can usually find these qualities on the set of a real fashion shoot. See in the fashion world the images that are produced are a combination of a meticulous team effort.

Creating the best senior guys, means a sharped dressed Senior. Guys like to look sharp and feel sharp. The most successful styling on a senior guy is to bring the good stu . If you have a suit bring it. If you want to rent a Tux-Suit that is totally cool.

Rules for shooting senior guys, sorry Mom, your going to have to sit this one out. We don’t really like having mom’s on set while we are shooting your senior. Sorry. Trust me, It’s best.

A girlfriend is a Mom’s best secret. Although we don’t allow mom’s on set, We do advise you to have your seniors Girlfriend be your Eyes, Ears and Heart. It’s on Mens gens to need the opinion of a trusted women. Senior Guys are most comfortable around their girlfriends, this will entail you, the mom, will get the best images from your seniors session. So arrange for the girlfriend to be at your Senior’s session!

Important as they are accessories for guys just make the images. Watches, ties, cu -links and good shoes are key. Unique accessories that personal to you are also a good idea. Some good examples of these are baseball gloves or other sporting attire.

Great images come from our mood. We are not big “smiley” kinda people. So we encourage our guys to just be themselves, relax and have a good time.
